Five hours later we had a slight lull in patients, allowing me the opportunity to step away for a rushed dinner. My shoulders slumped with exhaustion and relief when I found Eric sitting alone in the cafeteria. Setting my food down beside him I plopped down and laid my head on his shoulder.
“You okay?” His arm wrapped around my shoulders holding me close.
“I don’t know. To be honest it was all too much, the guys breaking in, Weston shooting him, my home being a crime scene.... I can’t believe it actually happened. Is this really happening…is this my life now? It makes me sick thinking about what could have happened if he wouldn’t have been there.” I stared at the tray in front of me; rehashing the memories again made my stomach churn and the food in front of me look undesirable.
Eric pulled his arm from my shoulders, which I immediately missed, and began eating knowing we wouldn’t have long on this break. It was a luxury that we had this time now.
“Can I ask you something?” He wiped his mouth with a paper napkin.
“Of course.”
“What’s really going on between you and Weston?”
My back straightened at the question. “Nothing, why?”
He laughed under his breath and took a sip of coffee. “Why are you denying it? He’s a great guy.”
“What am I denying?” I couldn’t look at him. I knew exactly what I was denying. I knew it the second I woke up that morning with my hand still wrapped in his. And liking it.
“Last night, Kate, you were happy. With all the shit going on around you, you were so happy simply sitting in that kitchen going back and forth with him. I don’t know if I’ve seen you that relaxed with a guy before. And Weston, damn that man, he gives you your shit right back and it’s amazing. He’s challenging you, pushing back on your bullshit. I think you’ve met your match in him, Kate Wheeler.”
I pulled my hand from my lip to grab the disposable coffee cup filled to the brim with burned coffee.
“And don’t worry, it’s not just you. He feels the same way. The way I see it, I think he’s simply happy to be in the same room with you.”
“I don’t know about all that. He likes being in the same room with me because he can see me, protect me better, that’s all. That’s what you’re seeing from him. He has made it very clear that something between us would never be an option,” I said skeptically.
This doesn’t change anything. Weston is off limits, he is still leaving.
“Believe what you want but what I saw was you happy with a guy that was just as happy being with you. What you do now is up to you, he has a job to do so he won’t be the one to make the first move. Honestly he is so focused on your safety I don’t know if he will ever relax enough to let himself act.
